What Is Soap Box Writing?

Soap Box Writing is a platform for me to exercise my writing ability and to express my interest in the stories of the world. While primarily I will write about topics that I personally find interesting, I do plan on attempting to cover more broad, important topics in order to expand my horizons as well to give me a challenge to write about.

While one of the main reasons for starting this blog is to practice my writing, another major influence for getting me to begin writing articles is to experiment more with journalistic writing. I have considerable experience in creative writing, specifically in poetry and screenwriting, and while in high school, I ran a blog documenting my process in creating a short film for my AICE Media Studies A class. As I begin a new stage of my life, I want to shift into more informational and journalistic writing, since I intend on pursuing a career in it somewhere down the line.

I intend on maintaining a semi-regular posting schedule, in order to give me some sense of deadlines to hold myself responsible to, as well as to curate some sizeable catalog of work in case I use this blog as an example of my work when searching for employment. I look forward to writing and pushing myself in new ways!

Voices Of Deception: How AI Voice Scams Are Exploiting Fear

Recently, the development of AI voice manipulation software has improved to a remarkable extent, in both accessibility and quality. However, while some may use AI voice software to make funny videos of U.S presidents playing videogames, or more ill-intentioned people can produce high-quality misinformation campaigns on notable figures, there have been instances where voice deepfake technology has been used on everyday people to manipulate them in intricate, efficient phone call scams.          To understand how these phony phone calls work to scam people out of thousands of dollars, one must first understand the basics of how the technology works. The process of voice cloning is broken down in an article by Voicemod.net , stating that users first feed the software audio recordings of the voice they want to replicate, which is then stored in a database for the AI to dissect and analyze. After enough data is sent to the cloning program, the software is then able ...

Opinion: Can Religion and Science Coexist?

For hundreds of years, there have been several debates that have permeated our history as unsolvable questions, long abandoned for any hope of an answer, and instead left to be used as mental exercises for philosophers and sociologists. Is the development of artificial intelligence ethical? Should mankind experiment in genetic engineering? What came first, the chicken or the egg? While all of these prompts are all equally significant and worthy of consideration, no other debate has manipulated the course of history quite like the question of whether science and religion can coexist or not. However, while both have long been considered to be polar opposites and thus incompatible on the most basic level, has there truly been an effort to compare the two's similarities, instead of only recognizing their differences? It is of my belief that while there are indeed definite cleavages between the two fields, there is also a substantial amount of crossover between the two, and that surpris...

Generative AI: The Tool Creatives Need or Their Worst Nightmare?

If you were to tell a person even a few years ago that computers would pose a genuine threat to the creative industry, then they would’ve probably not believed you. However, in today’s world, it seems that one cannot go a day or two without hearing about some new advancement in generative AI technology, or the protests against the increasing integration of the tech in creative spaces. Though one would have imagined this evolution in technology would be welcomed with open arms, it turns out that the creative industry is vehemently opposed to it. But why exactly is this?       Thanks to AI, the ability to whip up a story in seconds, mimic voices, and create full visual spectacles has been put in the hands of essentially anyone with access to a computer. However, this has many more drawbacks than one would expect, most notably in the writing industry. The issues that this technology poses to the quality of our writing, our ethics, and even our safety cannot...
